SCOPE

The 19th International Colloquium on Magnetic Films and Surfaces (ICMFS2006) is to be held at Sendai International Center, in a central area of Sendai, Japan, from August 14 (Monday) to August 18 (Friday). The aims of this Colloquium are to bring together scientists working on magnetic thin films and surfaces and to facilitate exchange of recent results and ideas around the following selected topics with emphasis on nanoscale magnetic systems. The Colloquium is co-hosted by Foundation Advanced Technology Institute.
This colloquium is jointly held with PASPS (Physics and Applications of Spin-related Phenomena in Semiconductors). The participants are able to attend both of meetings with one common registration. This will provide an opportunity where participants can present and discuss their recent works. The participation of young scientists in ICMFS2006 is most welcome.

PRESENTATION OF CONTRIBUTED PAPERS

Contributed papers accepted for the conference will be presented either orally or by poster. An oral presentation consists of a 12-minute talk followed by a three-minute discussion.

Poster sessions are scheduled from 13:30 to 15:00 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Authors are encouraged to post their posters early in the morning. One or more registered Conference participants (the author or his/her representative) must be present at the poster for a substantial part of the session. Display boards about 1.2 m wide by 1.8 m high will be provided for poster presentations. The title, authors, and affiliation should be prominently displayed. Material to fix the posters will be provided by the organization.

EXTENDED ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

The deadline for abstracts submission is March 1, 2006. Abstracts submission should come as an attachment in an E-mail message sent to icmfs2006@mlab.apph.tohoku.ac.jp. Download either PDF or MS-Word format of the abstract. Contact details and preference of your presentation should be given in the cover page.
The Organizing Committee will select referees to decide on the suitability of the paper for presentation and will communicate by May 1, 2006 on acceptance. Abstracts of all the accepted contributions will be published in an Abstract Booklet, which will be given to each participant at the Colloquium.

PROCEEDINGS

The Proceedings of the Colloquium will be published as a special issue of Journal of Physics D. It contains the talks of the invited speakers and the selected contributed papers. Detailed information regarding the preparation of manuscripts will be given here.

CONFERENCE SITE

We are proud to welcome you to the City of Sendai and share its beauty with you. With a population of approximately one million, Sendai is the political, economic, scientific, and cultural center of North-Eastern Japan in harmony with nature; lush greenery of zelkova trees that line streets, to the beautiful scenery that offers a peaceful atmosphere. While supporting a modern infrastructure, the City of Sendai respects its history, and many traditional events are still carried over unchanged from ancient to modern times. The weather in Sendai in August is rather warm, with an average daylight temperature between 25-30 degree C.
Sendai has a long history for research of magnetism. Institute for Materials Research, the first institute for the research of magnetism in Japan, was established in Tohoku University in 1922. The first director of this institute was Prof. Kotaro Honda, who was well known as an inventor of KS magnet. After this great success, a variety of functional magnetic materials were developed from this University and companies around Sendai. This city developed to be a Center of Excellence (COE) in the world for both basic and applied research in magnetic materials nowadays. It would be a great pleasure that we have the opportunity to discuss the future of "Spin-electronics" in Sendai.

The conference will be held at the Sendai International Center, which is near the Aoba castle and Tohoku University campus.

Citizens from most countries do not require a visa. However, in case of doubt, foreign participants are advised to contact the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in their home countries to check their particular visa requirements. Participants who need a personal invitation letter for the visa procedure should contact the Organizing Committee.
